Description

This Traditional Irish Soda Bread is quick to make and requires no yeast. It is a dense bread, but soft with a crispy exterior. Serve it warm out of the oven with honey or cream cheese…. yum! The hardest part about this recipe is waiting for it to come out of the oven!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (488 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons (46 grams) granulated suar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 11/4 cup buttermilk, divided
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and prep the baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Combine together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add in 1/2 cup softened butter and mix well until butter is thoroughly incorporated. Next add in 1 cup buttermilk and egg and mix until combined. I found that using my hands worked really well to make sure everything is combined really well.
  3. Lightly flour your work surface and knead your dough no more than eight times as you don’t want to overwork the dough.
  4. Shape the dough into a round shape and place on the prepared pan. Use a knife to slit an “X” onto the top of the dough. This will help the inside bake.
  5. Prepare a buttermilk wash with 1/4 cup melted butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk in a small dish. Mix well and use a pastry brush to apply a wash onto the dough.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes, applying the wash every 15 minutes.
