Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Beer Bread Rise?
Beer bread is a quick bread where the yeast from the alcohol interacts with the sugar in the honey and rises the bread. Baking powder also causes the bread to rise, allowing the bread to be less dense.
What kind of beer is best for Beer Bread?
As the bread bakes the alcohol evaporates leaving the flavorings of the beer, and really brings out some of the undertones. Changing out the beer will adjust the base flavoring of the bread.
Brown ales, stouts and porters will have the most robust flavors from the malts. Lighter beers will have less flavor.
A beer with fruit tones will lend a sweeter flavor, but won’t actually make the bread sweet.
IPAs and other hoppy beers will have a bit more of a bitter flavor. Some people may not like the flavor of the beer bread made with an IPA due to the bitterness.
What can I use instead of beer in beer bread?
You can use soda instead of beer. The acidity and carbonation of the soda will activate the baking powder and allow the dough to rise. Changing up the soda will adjust the flavoring of the bread.
Ginger ale will lend a neutral taste, but you can switch it out to a cola (or another flavor) to create a bolder flavor.
